Ask.   The fashion, culture, and other musings of our beloved Holy City

If you think its time for a trim:✄

“You are your greatest asset. Put your time, effort and money into training, grooming, and encouraging your greatest asset.”

Gentlemen its time for a haircut. Is there hair on your neck? Is your hair a little bit harder to tame? Take thirty-forty minutes of your day and enjoy a great timeless experience.

Walk into Lowcountry Barber Shop and you’ll find a clean space, simple and beautiful without a feeling of a “trying to hard” atmosphere. Write your name down on the sign-in sheet. Sit down in their simple waiting area. Enjoy a cup of fresh french vanilla coffee and pick up one of their magazines or sit and watch the news. You’ll wait no longer than five minutes. A woman will lean around the corner and call your name with a smile. She crosses your name off and escorts you to the barber chair. As you sit down you’ll talk for one or two minutes about your day before your asked what you’d like. If you go more than two times they’ll already know. Enjoy the light conversation while your hair is manicured. Without a doubt the best part is the finale a hot lather neck shave and massage. A low price for a great experience and another check off the list of “to-do’s.” They also offer free neck shaves in between cuts.

A store worth a walkthrough

On a flâneur down King street south of the crowded tourist and college area you’ll run into some incredible store fronts. One store you must visit is Ben Silver. Walk into the store and you’ll feel like you should have a drink and cigar in hand. The classic store takes you back in time. The clothing is beautiful and crafted to last a lifetime. The walls are lined with photos of celebrities like Cary Grant or thank-you notes from President Reagan. There are cases of beautiful blazer buttons. Walking deeper into the store you’ll see beautiful silk gentlemen’s and bow ties. If you appreciate classic toiletries their collection of Geo F. Trumper is a great find. Shelves of shoes are complemented by tuxedo gilded mannequins. In the back there is a section for the excellent collection of women’s ware.

We are the epitome of the elegant fine haberdasher that once could be found in the Main Streets of America, but now exists only on London’s Savile Row. We welcome you to visit us in our beautiful shop in Charleston, our cherished city; but, if you are unable to stop in our 19th century headquarters on historic King Street, we invite you to browse our site to discover the best of Ben Silver.”

Keeping Time-Keeping Classy

Technology is great and everything, but other people can notice every time you pull your phone out to check the time.  There’s a reason wristwatches were invented before cellphones.  A watch is an absolute must for any gentleman (or classy lady), but traditional ideas of sophisticated big flashy metallic watches don’t hold true in the South anymore.  Save the money you’d spend on a Rolex and use this strategy to have a great looking watch and some cash left in your wallet:

Hit Wal-Mart or Target or whatever wholesale store you prefer and pick out your favorite watch head, regardless of the band.  Buy it (usually around $20-30), take it home, and take the head off the band.  Then hit some of these great websites for some affordable watchbands:

Top Left: Personally, I’m not a big fan of J.Crew.  But their watchbands are simple, customizable, and affordable.  You can pick your own preference out of 8 designs ranging from $15-20.  http://tinyurl.com/jcrewbands

Top Center & Right:  O’Connell’s Clothing was a chance encounter for me that came up as the result of a Google search for “preppy watch bands”.  And boy, am I glad I found them.  With over 50 watchbands ranging in patterns from many different colors of plaid to seersucker to designs of sailing flags, whales, and lobsters, and all for $18 dollars, this is a great place to stock up on a watchband collection.  http://shop.oconnellsclothing.com/watchbands.php?nOffset=0&nLimit=20

⌚ Bottom Row:  I cannot say enough about Kiel James Patrick and his company.  Even if you don’t want to buy anything, visit his website and just read his story.  An all-American guy with a passion for “the simplicity and superior craftsmanship of classic-styled clothing from an older era that is long forgotten,” Kiel started up his preppy accessories business in college and continues to make all his products by hand from only American materials.  While he doesn’t have a watchband line (yet, we can still hope), some of his thinner bracelets, like the Cambreshire Dunes Collection, could serve perfectly as a band.  They’re a little more pricey than the other bands ($30-45), but with names like The Raoul Duke, The Daisy Buchanon, and The Atticus Finch, how can you not buy one?  Visit the website and check out all of Kiel’s other great products here: https://www.kieljamespatrick.com/cambreshireDunes.cfm?cRef=7

Remember:  A gentleman is always classy, and always punctual.
